About Lymphology

Edemas

Lymphedema (also soemtimes referred to as Elephantiasis) may be inherited (pri- mary) or caused by injury to the lymphatic vessels (secondary). It is most frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery and/or radiation therapy, in which damage to the lymphatic system is caused during the treatment of cancer, most notably breast cancer.

Complex decongestive physiotherapy is an empiric system of lymphatic massage, skin care, and compressive garments.

The physical therapy is therefore the most important part of the therapy. The com- pression garments prevent the success from decreasing. Before leaving the cli- nic, patients will be provided with special- ly made compression stockings to wear in the everyday life to maintain the achieved success as long as possible.
